Dear KMOTT Member
Lyndsay Wayman-Rook: ELM HERITAGE KENT – Reintroducing Elm to our landscape
We are delighted to announce details of a presentation on this important project to reintroduce Elm trees to the Kent landscape and invite our members and guests to join this event either in person or online.
Talk Commences at 2.15 pm
Tuesday 21st January 2025 The Lads’ Club, Rectory Lane, Saltwood, Hythe, CT21 4PZ
Many of us recall that tall mature Elm trees were a common feature across the Kent landscape, and that so many of these majestic trees were felled in the 1960’s and 1970’s due to the outbreak of Dutch Elm
Disease.
Kent Plan Tree is running a very specific project to reintroduce Elm to our landscape by planting disease-resistant varieties. This not only prospectively restores a much-loved tree to our countryside, but also improves the environment for the White-letter Hairstreak butterfly, which relies solely on Elm for survival.
Our speaker, Lyndsay, is a key member of the Kent Plan Tree team delivering this project, and we are very lucky that she has time to inform us of the scope, objectives, process and progress of the project in more detail. A number of Kent Men of the Trees members have already received Elm saplings planted by the project, and hopefully there will be many more.
